Many people with various disabilities have difficulty using computers without special assistive devices and software. This difficulty is creating a bigger barrier for them to participate in society, as more schools and jobs are requiring the use of computers. Open the windows is working on providing accessible IT to persons with disabilities throughout the South East Europe region. Accessible IT is technology consisting of software and hardward that is adapted to each user’s needs, regardless of disability. This technology includes a Universal Design principle which ensures that each user can use the equipment most effectively.

Accessible IT consists of three elements:

Accessible Options - options that are built within the operating system which allows the user to more easily operate the computer

Assistive Devices - hardware that is modified to the user’s specific needs

Compatibility - devices and software is compatible with each other and between operating systems.
